The Bill and Joanne Conway Dean of the University of Maryland School of Nursing and Professor

Yolanda Ogbolu, Ph.D., CRNP-Neonatal, FNAP, FAAN, is the Bill and Joanne Conway Dean and Professor at University of Maryland Baltimore School of Nursing. Over the past 13 years she has served in administrative leadership at UMB, including as Chair of Partnerships, Professional Education and Practice and past Director of Global Health. She also co-directed the Center for Health Equity and Outcomes Research and the Global Learning to Advance Health Equity Network.

Ogbolu came to academia after over 20 years of experience as a neonatal nurse practitioner. Since joining UMB in 2010, her interprofessional and community engaged research and scholarship has focused on advancing health equity and nurse capacity locally and globally. Projects center on strengthening nurses’ capacity to impact global health, improving the provision of culturally and linguistically appropriate care in rural and urban hospitals, and addressing social isolation and social determinants of health in marginalized communities. She has garnered over $12 million in funding, as PI and Co-I, from a diverse group of state and federal agencies, and foundations.

She has served nationally working on projects with the American Association of Nursing, National Quality Forum, National League of Nursing, and the Surgeon General’s Office. She has consulted internationally with the World Health Organization. She is an elected fellow of the National Academies of Practice and the American Academy of Nursing, and a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholar.

Disruptive Environment Breeds Innovation - Dispatch Health

The pandemic caused unprecedented adoption of alternative models of care by providers and consumers alike. Dispatch Health having a mission to build out the eco-system of health care around individuals’ homes has grown to 45+ markets across the country delivering high acuity emergency care, hospital at home programming and extended care services by physicians, advanced care nurse and nurses. With integrated virtual care nursing services foundationally providing in the moment response and interventions, outcomes have proved to meet the quadruple aim while also producing extraordinarily high patient satisfaction rates.

Neighborhood Nursing

The US spends a higher percentage of economy on healthcare than any other rich country, yet its citizens experience the worst health outcomes. One solution to this mismatch of expense with poor outcomes is to link every resident with a nurse/community health worker team. They will go door to door, available by text or app, and stationed at schools, libraries, and senior centers. Calling it the Neighborhood Nursing model, we propose that from birth to death, from prevention to palliative care, in any mental state, all people should have someone who comes to their home ready to listen to what matters to them. They will have multiple strategies, abilities, and skills to support residents’ self-efficacy, connect them with primary care and other services, and provide care on the spot. During this presentation, we will discuss the beginning in Maryland of this model with 4 Nursing schools working together- University of Maryland, Morgan State, Coppin State and Johns Hopkins.

Every day, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into our daily lives accelerates. Healthcare, in particular, is experiencing a rapid transformation due to this technology, leading to significant changes in how future healthcare workers collaborate and coexist with AI. Urgent calls have emerged for nursing to embrace AI more actively in care delivery and education. Despite this, AI remains a rare component in nursing curricula. This presentation aims to provide an overview of essential AI concepts and underscore the crucial role of nurse educators in preparing the profession for success in this technological revolution.

By 2030, the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics projects the United States will be short over two million registered nurses. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing attributes the national nursing shortage to nurses leaving the bedside profession, a shortage of nursing school faculty and clinical sites that restricts student enrollment, and a large segment of the workforce nearing retirement age. This presentation will explore how nurse leaders and educators can implement a collaborative care delivery and education model to support the preparation of entry-to-practice nursing students and sustain the future of the nursing workforce in acute care hospitals.

Access to healthcare continues to threaten the health and welfare of our population. With new advances in technology, telehealth is overcoming many barriers that have plagued patients, healthcare providers, and health systems. This presentation will provide an overview of the current state of telehealth in the US, the varying
Models used for telehealth delivery, and strategies to expand its effectiveness. The role of nursing as the leader in telehealth will be explored. Approaches for developing a telehealth-prepared nursing workforce that addresses the healthcare crisis will outlined.

In the ever-evolving landscape of healthcare, the well-being of the nurse is more critical than ever. One indispensable strategy we've embraced to retain our workforce is the power of custom selection by developing a range of creative financial initiatives tailored to meet the diverse needs of our staff. In a digital age, continuous learning is paramount, and we're committed to providing our employees with the tools and resources they need to thrive. Moreover, we revolutionized our learning and development initiatives by offering innovative virtual and onsite learning options. We implemented COVID-specific incentives to support our frontline workers during these unprecedented times. We understand the importance of fostering a culture of appreciation and belonging. That's why we've introduced warm touches and creative appreciation tactics such as the Caring Cart-a mobile appreciation station that travels throughout our facilities, spreading joy and gratitude to our hardworking staff.

Nurses are regularly exposed to trauma in the workplace. Although leaders cannot eliminate trauma, they should be sensitive to the trauma their staff experience in the workplace. Leaders can mitigate workplace trauma by building healthy work environments and organizational cultures that promote personal connections built on trust and authenticity and prioritize rest. Creating work environments where individuals feel safe promotes quality and safety. During this presentation leaders and educators will consider the impact of workplace trauma on workforce retention, morale, and safety and explore how as leaders we can apply the principles of trauma-informed care to realize, recognize, respond, and resist re-traumatization of nurses on their team

Patricia Travis, PhD, RN, CCRP, served as a director-at-large (2012 - 14) and secretary of the American Nurses Association (ANA) for two terms (2016 - 20). Travis is the senior associate director, clinical research in the School of Medicine Office of Research Administration at the Johns Hopkins University. During her 27 years of active-duty military service, she was the recipient of numerous military and professional honors and published and lectured on nursing, health care, and research topics. Travis served for many years as a consultant on medical/legal, research, and compliance issues and served on the data and infrastructure workgroup for the state of Maryland, appointed by the Health Services Cost Review Commission.

Dedicated to professional organizations, Travis has served on the ANA Political Action Committee board of trustees (2012 - 14). At the state level, Travis served the Maryland Nurses Association (MNA) in many leadership roles, including president (2009 - 11) and first vice president of the board of directors (2007 - 08). She was a representative to the MNA board of directors from MNA District 3, as well as the district’s 2010 delegate to the ANA House of Delegates. She represents MNA as a nurse co-lead with the Maryland Nursing Action Coalition. Additionally, Travis is an American Nurses Advocacy Institute fellow.

Supported by the military, Travis earned her BSN, MS, and PhD degrees from the University of Maryland School of Nursing. She has been certified as a Clinical Research Professional since 2004.
